iron lung

An "Iron lung" is a medical ventilator that enables a person to breathe. The sculpture utilizes glass ashtrays to encase preserved butterflies whose wings are a metaphor for the human lung. Incidentally butterflies do not have lungs, they breathe through tiny openings on the sides of their body.
